Biggest Tunes of 2014 w/ Undercover

Here we are - the biggest tunes of 2014 according to I. Bold are my top picks, the cream. Who Knows is pretty much THE anthem for 2014 - leading rasta revivalists unite inna feel good vibe - trade winds, sunshine, rivers and trees, you get the idea. Diamond Sox featuring Notis and Iba Mahr (with Tarrus on the remix) comes like a breath of fresh air in 2014. Nothing new with a killer 80s inspired digital riddim but the excitement I get when listening to this tune is electric. So those take the podium for me. What are yours? Top 5 artists of the Year for me would have to be Chronixx, Protoje, Jesse Royal, Iba Mahr and Tarrus Riley. Nearly 75 tracks, enjoy!

Mean Girl Riddim w/ Twice Nice

Mean girl Twice Nice hooked us up some killer Mean Girl/I Need a Roof licks spanning an amazing 40 years. From Larry Marshall's classic lick and hook on Studio One in 1968 to Pavlove, Prince Far-I and Little Joe, to a stepping Channel One version with Mighty Diamond next milestone I Need a Roof. Bunny Lee alway got in on the action this time with a killer soul vocal from Jackie Edwards, some big Joe Gibbs productions went down with Trinity and Junior Byles, Augustus and Hugh Mundell murdered the riddim on Rockers, then of course it came back to Studio One come Sugar Minott. The eighties treated it kindly with some killer early rubadub dancehall at Midnight Rock. The Revolutionaries had not given way to the Casio just yet, but when it did it kept its integrity and bubbled along nice time thanks to Jammys and Black Solidarity. The nineties riddim stayed fat and militant with Xterminator voicing  crucial cuts with Sizzla and Capleton and Cocoa Tea. Come '07 we had Ray Darwin scoring a huge hit for Tads and in '08 Prince Fatty and longtime legend Little Roy rub up the dance nice time - 40 years on. Give Thanks Twice!

Hold On / Undercover

A little walk through history of the stupendous output of early R'n'B shuffle, jazz, afro, bluebeat, ska and rocksteady that came outta from Jamaica from 1958 - 1969. A mixed bag selection wise, stuff I'm digging, some crucial rare business as well as some bonifide classics that defined reggae as we know it. The jazz side of things shows the class of musicians that formed the foundation of the Ska sound while the R&B and shuffle sounds borrowed heavily from the US mainland pop records and where given the Jamaican Rub. Swell Headed Riddim w/ Twice Nice and Undercover

Big Big Ups to long-time follower Twice Nice for this fine Swell Headed riddim rundown! Upon hearing the latest Kabaka tune, Twice emailed me some big tunes pon the riddim resulting in said post! We start with the ital Burning Spear original, followed by the Pablove Black instrumental classic, both from Coxsone Dodd at Studio One. A trend we will no doubt notice. The Revolutionaries picked up the riddim in 1976 and laid down a typically heavy militant roots version at Channel One while Deejays U Roy and Prince Far saw a good thing going and jumped on to voice. Rod Taylor and Black Solidarity blazed a steppers classic while Freddie McGregor recorded some prime 80s rub-a-dub on the Spiderman label. Come 1996 and the Dancehall era and we have Everton Blender flying the roots flag high and gives us nuff vibes. European crew Reggae On Top takes it inna millenium roots digital steppers territory with a big soundsystem dub to follow. And 42 years later we have the leading lights of Jamaican reggae Chronixx and Kabaka bring it back inna Channel One style. Bless. Riddim!

Burning Spear - Swell Headed - Studio One (1972)
Pablove Black - Push Pull - Studio One (1972)
The Revolutionaries - Swell Headed - Channel One (1976)
The Mighty Diamonds - Swell Headed Dubplate - Channel One (1976)
U Roy - Swell Head Skank - Channel One (1976)
Rod Taylor - The Lord Is My Light - Black Solidarity (1979)
Pablove Black - Dread Head - Studio One (1979)
Prince Far I - Give I Strength - Cry Tuff (1981)
Freddy McGregor - Never Get Away - Spiderman (1982)
Ernest Ranglin - Black Disciples - Island (1996)
Everton Blender - Live Up - How Yu fi Sey Dat (1996)
Barry Issac - Swell Headed - Reggae On Top (2000)
Reggae On Top All Stars - Swell Headed Dub - Reggae On Top (2000)
Chronixx - World Under Seige aka Di Youth Dem Freestyle - Roots Tribulation (2013)

Big Tunes w/ Undercover

Alrighty, some huuuge tunes starting to drop again - reggae is vibing on the vintage right now. Tarrus has dropped an amazing album teaming up with Dean Fraser as they mix big solid riddims with sweet lovers licks - all killer, no filler on that one - much in the same vein as the recent Shaggy and Bitty albums. Randy Valentine is one of my favorite vocalists right now and he's dropped some maad vintage styles to follow up on his No1 Station hit on Bring Back the Love. Addis Pablo is another youth hitting his straps and releasing his debut full length In My Fathers House - a nod towards his pa. A few solid melodic dub sonic booms in there. The latest crop of Roots Riddims drop including Jahdan, Pressure and Ziggi on Jah Warriah Riddim, Tarrus, Jah Cure and Christopher on Zion Train Riddim, Kabaka, Chronixx and Wayne Marshall on Cultivator Riddim and Jah Sun, Skarra Mucci and Lutan Fyah on Swing Easy Riddim.
